Senior School Orchestra

New Musicians

Tuesday, Late Start Practice Session (8:05 - 8:55am)

For incoming Grade 6s involved in the instrumental club and Junior School orchestra in 2022-23, we are offering an additional session for students to continue building knowledge and skills on their instruments on top of the regular Tuesday after school orchestra practices. (Please note: there is no time at the Tuesday orchestra practice to work on individual instrument skills and students do not get individual attention. For students who do not take private lessons, this extra session is required to keep up knowledge and skills. Students who take weekly private lessons may opt out of this session.)

For current 6 orchestra members who would like to learn a secondary orchestral instrument OR if your student would like to learn one of the primary orchestral instruments, please sign up HERE and we will arrange a time for your student to try-out instruments. Soon after the try-out sessions, you will be given information regarding renting instruments. The practice sessions will be on Tuesdays, 8:05 - 8:55am. The deadline is Sept 30th.
For Grade 6s who have been taking weekly lessons learning an orchestral instrument outside of school and can read music competently and are interested in trying-out for the instrumental club or orchestra, please sign up HERE. Your student will be given a piece to work on for 3 weeks and a time will be assigned for them to come to the music room and have a chance to play.  A sight reading piece will also be given during the session. The deadline is September 30.

Returning Musicians
Morning practices 7:45 - 8:15am (Monday / Wednesday / Thursday)

Same as last year, students who would like to do a bit more practice can come in from 7:45 - 8:15am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. For both late start Tuesday morning practice and Monday / Wednesday / Thursday morning practices, please drop off your student directly at the DP building and have them go to the Junior School Music Room.

New Musicians
Tuesday, Orchestra Rehearsal (3:30 - 4:45pm)

For Orchestra members, it is important to attend this practice weekly. Advanced notice of absences is requested so time can be caught up. Students who are not attending this session regularly will find it increasingly challenging over time as the orchestra becomes more mature and pieces become more demanding. Please email me as soon as possible so we can discuss how to support your student’s success.

Returning Musicians
Instrumental Club (Mondays and Thursdays 3:30 - 4:40pm)

If your student was enrolled in the instrumental club and the practices were either Mondays or Thursdays, your student can continue joining us on those days. Since they have 5 months of experience, they will be placed in the intermediate instrumental club. Please note that Mondays will eventually become a mixed level practice in cycle 2 when Grade 3 starts the beginner instrumental club in November.

Start dates:
Intermediate instrumental clubs Monday, September 18 and Thursday, September 21
Late start practice Tuesday, September 19
Stratford Hall Orchestra Tuesday, September 19

Please note that the week after a long holiday, the clubs will take a one week break to catch up on home practice and all rehearsals will resume one week after the holidays.

Debate and Persuasive Speaking with Present Pro

This program is designed, for students in Grades 6-12, to elevate them to the highest level of competitive debate and speech. Students will learn a set of strategies to efficiently prepare compelling persuasive speeches on the spot. They will also learn how to attack and defend the content of these speeches by critically analyzing arguments and ideas. These skills will be applied to various competitive debating formats which allow for structured thought provoking discussions on history, politics, economics, science, and current events.

The course will run from the week of October 2 through to the week of December 11. For information on course descriptions and registration fees, please visit https://www.presentpro.org/registration.
