Campus Life

Sustainability

At Stratford Hall we believe that education is not only about academic excellence, but also about cultivating responsible global citizens. Through innovative programs, thoughtful initiatives, and a collaborative spirit, we empower our students to embrace environmental stewardship, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to create a more sustainable and harmonious future for themselves and the world around them.

Student Action

For the third consecutive year, we are striving to maintain our EcoSchools Platinum standing. The Student Sustainability Council meets weekly to coordinate student-led initiatives, including community cleanups, clothing swaps, and donation drives. Key highlights of the year include our waste-free lunch program, collaborative projects with the Garden Club and Arts Council, and the annual EcoFair in April.

Teaching and Learning

Sustainability is woven into the fabric of the Stratford Hall curriculum, engaging students in environmental and experiential learning from K-12.
  • Primary Years Programme (PYP): Students explore sustainability through trans-disciplinary themes such as Sharing the Planet and How the World Works, connecting classroom inquiry to real-world action.
  • Middle Years & Diploma Programme (MYP/DP): Environmental stewardship is embedded across various disciplines. Notable examples include the "Action for Real Community Change" Design elective, interdisciplinary units on Resources and Technology, and the DP Geography focus on Climate Action.

School Infrastructure

Stratford Hall is committed to reducing our carbon footprint through practical, campus-wide initiatives. Across our three buildings, we manage dedicated recycling streams for batteries, soft plastics, and writing instruments, alongside a green waste composter on the MYP rooftop. We emphasize daily habits like double-sided printing and paper towel composting. Excitingly, our infrastructure continues to evolve with the upcoming installation of solar panels—a direct result of a student-led action project.

Community Engagement

Sustainability at Stratford Hall is a collective effort. Our Sustainable Travel Weeks encourage students and staff to choose biking, walking, or transit, while our staff lunches have shifted toward local, package-free catering and reusable containers. The Stratford Hall Parents Association (SHPA) continues to lead as sustainability champions, ensuring school events are environmentally conscious. Beyond our walls, students engage with the wider world through Citizen Science projects like iNaturalist and collaborations with the City of Vancouver on green infrastructure.
